This site is awesome. I have lived through a couple of hurricanes, seen a few tornadoes, and now see microbursts here in AZ. These weather phenomenons are amazing. The pure power, and energy that they have dwarf what the all mighty man can do. And the wreckage they cause can be catastrophic.

But, what most don't realize is that termites do more damage each year then earthquakes, storms, hurricanes, and fires combined. Interesting isn't it.

Leslie Rankine is the UK pop star Ruby. Silverfish is the name of a band.... or two or three. It has become difficult to keep any originality these days with the world becoming so small and the internet so big. Silverfish are also know as firebrats. Now that is a name no one has taken.

Atlanta Georgia Has Scorpions?

I am reporting that it is true. You can find scorpions in Atlanta Georgia. In fact, I am shocked at the rise in requests from homeowners in Atlanta for help with killing their scorpions. It would seem to me that the scorpion population is increasing.

So I searched out the info on this and found several blogs with people frantic about their Atlanta Scorpion Problem. Of course you can't believe everything you read.

I can confirm that individuals from Atlanta seeking scorpion advice have contacted me and bought DIY Scorpion Products. And I am happy to say that I only know of one pest control companies in Atlanta that deals with scorpions directly. How does a site that is only 5 months old get to the top of Family Pest Control on Google? Or how does the same site show up #1 on Google after 1 week of updating a page for Pest Control Map? These may seem small feats for some but our Do-it-yourself pest control site is no where near the top and its been up for two years now.

Its called black hat SEO. How else can you explain it? And it may produce short term results for the website, but the negative repercussions for Bulwark Pest Control are going to be huge. But I can't blame them for trying. Good luck with that Ken.

I highly recommend adding the free RSS feed to your blog and the followers. The web community is become more and more a community and information on the information highway is now traveling at light speed.

Why '''Do it Yourself''' (DIY)? There are only three good reasons to do it yourself.

1- To Save Money. If you can do a project effectively by yourself and it saves you money then DIY is a good option. Just remember the old saying "Time is Money". So consider the money and the time and if you can do the project effectively.

2- You can Do It Better. You may take more pride in your work then a minimuim wage employee. And as my father would say, "If you want it done right then Do-It-Yourself." If you are confident in your ability to do it, especially if the project requires little to no skill then DIY is a good option.

'3- To Learn a New Skill. This is perhaps the trump card in reasons for DIY projects. I believe that individuals need to be self sufficient. I believe in being educated. I believe in increasing my knowledge daily. DIY projects are a great opportunity to learn.

I found the article on Bulwark pest control 's blog today quite entertaining. To think that a man who makes a living killing bugs, survived because of termites. Of course, if you think about that a little more then maybe it isn't irony. He makes a living killing bugs so he was lost and continued to live by killing bugs. Many Professional Products can be bought online these days. Most of the products used by professionals are more expensive and come in a concentrated form, but its much cheaper to buy them and do-it-yourself. But how do you use a professional product?

Steps

1- First you must find the professional product. Simply ask a professional what product they use, if they have an MSDS sheet, and/or what is the active ingredient.
2- READ THE LABEL. Professional products carry very specific instructions. The label will explain what the product is for, how to dilute the product for each use, and the cautions that you take. The label will be divided up into sections. Pay attention to each section.
Warning Section of the Label- At the top is usually the warning section and the toxicity label. This section will give you precautions that should be taken, like "wear gloves"
First Aid Section- You will find a section on health risks and treatments to dangerous exposures.
How to Use- You will also find a section on "use" or "instructions". This section should provide you with a dilution rate or ration if it is a concentrate. It will also provide different rates depending on use and equipment. For example, You will need an higher concentrate rate of round-up to kill nut grass then you will crabgrass. This can also hold true for insects, scorpions may need a higher concentrate then roaches. So Mix the product according the mixing rate. It will often give you a range. DO NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM RATE.
3- If the Label is too complex then seek additional help or DO NOT USE.
4- Store the professional product in a safe place away from children and pets and in the proper temperature range. The label will also provide you with storage temperatures and explosive or flammable temperatures if applicable.

If you purchase your do-it-yourself products online then make sure there is a phone number for someone to talk to.

Does Google's new search bots really mean much of a change? It seems to me that Google makes the rules so why should we fret over their new Search Bots hitting forums?

Well, this could be good or bad. Google may give you negative points for good links to your site. Or they may give positive points to spammers.

Ultimately, if you play Google's game then you play by their rules. If you say the heck with Google then it doesn't concern you....

Raid vs Scorpions

I just got an email from a lady in Mesa AZ, that was in desperate need of some scorpion control. I replied and told her that I would be happy to help. A few minutes later I got an email from her stating not to worry because her "Raid for Flying Pests" could kill scorpions as well. Apparently she no longer needs my help.

I often reply to individuals that just want to use raid that its not going to work. I stand corrected,... somewhat. Raid does kill bugs. But, does Raid Control bugs?

I have another solution for you. Its completely organic and it is guaranteed to kill all pests. Plus it will last a lifetime. Its only $5 and I will ship it for free! Its quite simple. Its two pieces of wood. All you need to do is place the bug in between the two pieces of wood and gently apply pressure. If the bug does not die then repeat applying more pressure. Again, this will kill all pests, and rodents.

The moral... Raid will kill most any pest with direct contact. However, it is not really effective as a pest control solution. Although some raid does offer a residual. But why not buy the professional aerosol, cy-kick cs? Longer residual and higher concentrate, and it still falls in the same caution level. And its only $20!

Environmentally Friendly?

What does Environmentally Friendly mean?

Does it mean that the pest control is a natural product? Does it mean that it is an organic product? Does it mean that it will break down easily for the enviroment? Does it mean taking as little from the enviroment as possible? Or does it mean that it is safe for me and my family?

That's the problem with "green" pest control or "Environmentally friendly" pest control, they are so ill defined. Even a natural product can differ from an organic product. Natural meaning not man made, and organic meaning carbon based. Not all natural products are carbon based. Of course all organic (carbon based) products are natural products. The next common error is to assume that all natural products are safe. Many natural compounds are more toxic then the pest control products sold on pestprojoe.com. In fact, many venoms and bites are more toxic then the pest control used to control the insects that carry that venom.

I personally would rather take a sip of cy-kick cs over a scorpion sting.

And lets not get started on which is better for the enviroment, taking a lot more energy, time, and space to grow and produce chemical compounds that could be made with less energy and more efficiently in a lab. The same chemical compound man made, or not, is still the same chemical compound. And if one wants what is lest toxic it could be best to go with a controlled man made substance then a natural compound that may vary in toxicity based on the batch.

However, having said all of that, there are still green products that I love and use inside of my own home. EcoSmart Products are wonderful. They are derived from natural plant and tree oils. They are quality grade and highly effective. There is a lot of science that has gone into their development. So if you don't mind spending a little bit more to try and help the enviroment then EcoSmart is one product that I would recommend.

I am not opposed to Environmentally Friendly Pest Control, in fact I am all for it. I merely suggest that individuals better define what that means to them.

Google Page Ranking....?

I personally can not figure out google's page ranking system. It seems that my best sites are running at rank of 2 while most of my sites are a 1.

This hasn't concerned me too much in the past since I still generate traffic and get sells.

However, it is disturbing that a fake pay-per-link page like www.bulwarkexterminating.com is ranked at a 3. While the official company site www.bulwarkpest.com is ranked at a 2.

How is it possible that a cyber squatting site is ranked higher then the official bulwark site? Further, if you search for bulwark exterminating the squatter's site doesn't even show up in the results yet the low ranking official site shows up first.

The final problem I have with DMOZ is that the few webmaster's that have managed to get into editorial positions are going to have all the advantage. I don't think that PestProJoe.com is even listed in the DMOZ.... But that doesn't stop the site from being great!

Of course it is easy to keep customer's happy when they are only paying $4 or less per pest control treatment!

Flea Control Products

There are many flea control products out there today that both prevent and eliminate flea infestations. There are products that are beneficial to the pet as well as the pet owner.

For pets shampoos and collars help. You can also buy pills that are very effective. Just check your local pet store.

Flea foggers-word of caution-MOST STORE BOUGHT FOGGERS DON"T WORK VERY WELL. If you are going to use them, read the label If you try foggers then make sure they have a growth regulator in them. Some foggers are just a contact killer and this will not work long term. Look for the word "methoprene", it is a growth regulator for fleas.
I would recommend what the pros use PRECOR Its only $19.95 and its well worth it.

Important Tip: Before any flea treatment you want to vacuum like CRAZY and throw the vacuum bag out after the vacuuming. This will help the treatment greatly.

MOSQUITO CONTROL

As they say when it rains.... then the mosquitos come a biting.
Mosquitoes are bad this year. Mosquitoes are controlled best by draining puddles and keeping areas as dry as possible, but when you're at a picnic you don't want to come home looking like the mosquitoes used you for a pin cushion. There are several repellent ou there with the ingredient Deet in them that work well, then there are the bug zappers of old that kill anything that will fly into it, and then there is a newer product that incorporates the natural attractors of carbon dioxide that your body releases that draws the mosquitoes to you and it also imitates the body's heat by emitting a warmth from the trap, then the unsuspecting insect gets sucked into the trap via a vacuum. These traps are very expensive and there are several models on the market, but some find it worth the price especially if you entertain a lot outside.

BED BUG KILLER

Eaton's Bed Bug Killer is a quart sized ready to use spray used mostly as a follow up to a bed bug treatment to kill any re-emerging bed bugs. It is an oil based contact killer so there is no residual and becasue it is oil based you have to be careful where you spray it. It seems to be getting good review on the web. One of the few products out there specifically for the little buggers.

What would you list as the top 10 reasons to do-it-yourself?

I bet that price comes in at the top for DIY. But is that really the best reason? Can you think of other reasons why?

Here are my personal reasons:

10. Because it takes time to find a really good professional, and time is money.

9. Because being self reliant is a virtue, and a blessing for fiercely independent people.

8. By the time I some that could do it, I could have already had it done.

7. Because most things come with instructions, and reading is good for you.

6. Because my life at work is boring, so I want to do real work when I get home.

5. Because there is a sense of pride in the fact that ,"I made it." or, "I didn't all by myself." (Ask my 2 year-old if you don't believe me.)

4. Because getting off the couch and doing anything is a step in the right direction.

3. Because my wife made me do it.

2. Because its cheaper.

1. Because if you want it done right then you better, "Do-It-Yourself".

So do-it-yourself and do it better.

Why DIY?

Contrary to popular belief, the main reason for DIY is not (or should not be) about saving money. While this is possible in many cases (and especially against 'top of the line' commercial products), there are other, far better reasons to do it yourself.

The main one is knowledge, new skills, and the enormous feeling of satisfaction that comes from building your own equipment. This is worth far more than money. For younger people, the skills learned will be invaluable as you progress through life, and once started, you should continue to strive for making it yourself wherever possible.

Each and every new skill you learn enables the learning processes to be 'exercised', making it easier to learn other new things that come your way.

Conclusion

People choose DIY for the fun of creation, to learn, or to get something that can't be bought because it is too specialised - even in a seemingly minor respect. Sometimes, all three will be involved at the conscious level, but all three will be usually be involved at the subconscious level.

When you make something (even from a kit), you have the opportunity to customise it so that it does exactly what you want, not what someone else's marketing department told you you want. You will always learn from the experience of building it, even when it seems like a mindless chore stuffing components into a PCB and soldering them in. When it's finished, installed in your system, and doing exactly what you want, then the fun and pride of having made it will always be there - even long after the event.

Do you get any of these things when you buy a product? In a word, no. It is simply a commodity, something that countless others have, exactly the same as yours. If it doesn't do exactly what you want, then you have to live with it - even make excuses to yourself in extreme cases (where you'd like to strangle the salesthing given the chance).

DIY is not for everyone. Some people are forced into it because they can't get exactly what they want, and others do it because they think they'll save money. These are not good motives for DIY, although once they get into it, the motives will hopefully change.

The number one reason for DIY is simple - fun. Audio is a hobby for most people, and hobbies are meant to be fun - recreation at its best. In the same way that listening to your system is a recreational activity, so too is building your system yourself. As with all hobbies, there are new skills to learn, a complete jargon to master (that part is admittedly not so much fun), and something to show for it when it is completed.

Having acquired various tools (and talents) along the way, you may find that you can use them for other DIY activities - especially woodworking tools. Again, don't expect to save money. Many goods are available that are made in China (or perhaps India or some other developing country) for far less than you could build them for. Some are real bargains - well made, and will last well in normal use. Others are terrible - cheap materials, flimsy and with a marginal finish that won't last until next Thursday.

The old saying that 'you get what you pay for' no longer holds relevance - some bargains are real, others are very obviously false. Some highly priced goods are no different from the bargains, many having been made in the same factory (some may even be identical to a bargain version).

Again, the DIY approach is more about satisfaction and creation than anything else. If you do happen to save money in the process, then so much the better.

... Of course you can always do pest control yourself for less.

I am amazed at how inaccurate professional news can be. If fact, I heard NBC site a paper from Europe headlining, "This Shooting is as American as Apple Pie." I was floored when I heard the statement, so I decided to research it a bit and found no source. I even posted the question on Yahoo and found no source. All I could find was an obscure blog that had posted the above quote. So I am going to have to assume that NBC had no source and that another professional news company was not reporting anything accurate or substantial.

Which leads me to the East Valley Tribune and its recent article on "Heat brings out scorpions, sort fact from fiction." By Jill Redhage. Her article stated that "much of what we think about scorpions is myth." She also went on with the following "Myth Busters":

Myth: My home could become infested with scorpions.
Myth: Pesticides are effective against scorpions.
Myth: Small scorpions are more dangerous than large scorpions.
Myth: Scorpion stings are always dangerous.

3 of the 4 statements above are arguably true, and the 4th one is only Myth because it deals in an absolute. If scorpions venom where to carry a chemical label, then it would most likely fall into the Hazardous labels. At any rate, I was and am still shocked that the reporter made such claims. Especially since her claims were only based on a single Community College professor.

If you want my Professional opinion I would say:

Truth: My home could become infested with scorpions.
Truth Pesticides are effective against scorpions.
Partially True: Small scorpions are more dangerous than large scorpions.
Myth: Scorpion stings are always dangerous.

Of course that is coming from an individual that actually worked in pest control, me, versus and college professor with all of his "book knowledge".

FYI... this same college professor suggests killing weeds by boiling water and then dumping it on the weed. This technique will work, but how energy effective is it?
